What he wanted
Pankaj’s house was ten years old, a three-bedroom home with a kitchen and a living area. He wanted one more room added on the upper floor, which meant the house needed a proper internal staircase. He also wanted the kitchen made larger, with a bar counter worked into it, and some way to bring an open courtyard into a home.

The challenge
An older home renovated well has to solve two problems at once. It needs to gain new space without feeling stitched together, and whatever is added must sit as comfortably. A new staircase, in particular, changes a house more than most single additions do. It needs a place to land both upstairs and down.

The idea
We placed the new staircase at the front of the house and let it do double duty as a piece of the elevation itself, a stone-clad stair that reads as a considered feature rather than an afterthought. That staircase is what made the new room upstairs possible. In the kitchen, we extended the space by vastu and built in the bar counter Pankaj had asked for, and beside it opened a small courtyard that catches its own light and greenery, visible not only from the kitchen but from the living area as well. So the whole ground floor gained a view it never had before. Alongside the kitchen work, we gave the home a proper dining space of its own.
